July 17, 2010 – 3:47 am

Some user has already install laminate flooring in his office. But he plans to install railings on it. He wonders how to do the work. Also he wonders if he can do it himself.

Our reply is as folling: The materials for railings are very expensive. Only well experienced carpenters can work out good quality railings. So it is not suitable to do the working himself. The carpenters have special tools to work on railings. For the railings, it is up to the carpenters. It will be better to place some pad on the laminate flooring to protect during the installation of railings.  There must be about 8mm gap between the railings and laminate flooring for expansion purpose. Skirting, quarter round or end cap can be used to cover transition space.

Our answer:

There are some tips he need to care when installing laminate flooring: If the doors is in more than two directions, make the short side of laminate flooring toward the most doors or the most important door to offer a beautiful look. There should be heavy traffic with the house since there are many doors with the room. So make sure the accessories to be intalled at the doorway is strong abrasion resistant. Copper reducer and end cap will be a good selection as these accessories meet the requirement. There should be a 4mm high gap between the door and laminate flooring accessories at the doorway.

Can laminate flooring be sound resistant?

July 6, 2010 – 3:16 am

Someone has a question: I have installed laminate flooring in my bedroom. It make the room looks warm. But there is another problem: There will be some noise when people when people walk on it. Can I replace it wit other type which is sound resistant.

Actually this type of laminate flooring hasn’t appeared yet. : ) Laminate is of a floating type. The planks will rub the subfloor when it moves and then make some sound. So it is impossible that to remove the all sound when people walk on laminates. But the noise can be reduced a great deal with the following way: 1. Attach underlay to laminate during production. Then it is the attached underlay which rubs the sub floor rather than the back of laminates. 2. Use thicker laminates such as 12mm or 14mm thick laminates. It is much more difficult for thicker laminate floor to move. And thus there is less sound.

An installation question of laminate flooring

August 2, 2009 – 1:31 am

Someone planed to install laminate flooring in his rooms. But there is a round column in the rooms. The wooden profile can’t cover the transition area between the planks and column. He wonder how to deal with the problem.

Our reply:

It is a special case to cover the transition area between column and laminate flooring. A special copper profile can solve the problem as it is easy to change the shape of copper with the help of coppersmith. Buy some copper end cap. The end cap will be used to cover the transition area. But its position is upside down. Ask a coppersmith to make the end cap match the bottom of column and the neighboring planks. Then fix the end cap on the column and stick the transition area. Do touch the copper end cap in 48 hours. Finally the special profile is made.

May 1, 2009 – 7:57 pm

Someone plans to install wood laminate floor with attached underlay in his living room. Now he wonders if extra pad is needed to resist the moisture from the subfloor.

There are total 4 layers of wood laminate floor. The bottom layer is moisture resistance layer. The pad directly put on the subfloor is used to reinforce the performance of moisture resistance. There is usually a type of film which main material is PE, EPE or EVA on the surface of pad which plays a key role for the damp resistant purpose. If the attached underlay is with the film, then extra pad is not necessary. If not, extra pad is still needed for heavy damp place. The thickness of the pad should not exceed 2mm.

Walk on wood laminate floor with metal crunch?

April 25, 2009 – 3:03 am

Someone has to walk with the help of 1 pair of metal crunch. He likes wood laminate floor to be installed on his room. He is concerned if the metal crunch will break the floor.

The bottom of the metal crunch should be covered with some special plastic pad or the bottom of the crunch is very obtuse. The metal crunch will not break the floor in this case. The floor will be broken if there is a sharp end at the bottom of the metal crunch. Though wood laminate floor is strong abrasion resistant, the floor will be broken if its surface is often heavily pressed with the sharp end of metal things.

Install laminate flooring on a lean surface?

April 14, 2009 – 2:09 am

Someone plans to install some floor covering material on a lean subfloor. And he wonders if laminate flooring is a good selection and how to do the installation work.

Laminate flooring(L) is of a “floating” type. Unlike hardwood flooring, there is no nail used to fix L during the installation. In fact, the whole area of L is like a big tile put on the subfloor free. The laminate flooring can be installed with the follow way:

1. The installation area should be less than exceed 4*6m.

2. Make the lean surface straight and dry.

3. The lean must be less than 30 degree if the height installation area is over 2 lengths of the planks.

4. Set up a straight row of firm holder such as cement to support the laminate flooring at the bottom of the lean space. Use copper accessory to cover the transition space between laminate flooring and the holder..

5. Make the long side of the planks be upward if the height of installation area over 2 widths of the planks.

A right way to disassemble wood laminate floor?

April 8, 2009 – 6:34 am

There is a big area of wood laminate floor installed in someone’s room. Now he wants to disassemble it and install the planks in another room. He found that the planks are more quickly to be disassembled if he pulls the long side of one plank upward. And he wonders if it is a right way to disassemble the planks.

In fact his way is wrong. The plank he pulls is connected with other plans with locking system at both long side and short side. Part of the locking system will be destroyed with the way. And the plank will be bent and even broken with the way. So the planks can’t be installed again. In fact the people can begin to take the wood laminate floor out from the short side at the end installation area. Or he can have several people to disassemble the planks at the long side at the time. These are 2 right ways to disassemble the planks.
