Laminate flooring for kitchen?

Someone asked: I plan to install laminate flooring in all of my rooms including my kitchen. But I worry that unseen spills will make laminate broken. Please give me some suggestion if laminate can be installed the kitchen.

The answer:

The unseen spills can’t make laminate flooring plump as long as it is cleaned immediately or the locking system is waxed. The real problem for the installation of laminate at kitchen is that there is often large amount of water splashed on the floor which will make laminate pushes up. What’s more kitchen is too damp. So laminate is not suitable for kitchen. I suggest that you choose ceramic tile or marble for kitchen floor.

Different colors of laminate flooring for one house

Some one has a question:” I plan to install laminate flooring in my house. I have 1 daughter and 2 sons. They prefer their favorite colors for their rooms. And their favorite colors are different. Will the different colors make my house looks disorder and ugly?”

The answer:
Different colors of laminate flooring will not look disorder as there is wall separation. If the corridor is installed with ceramic tile, marble or granite, the color of outside floor will not affect the look of laminate. But different colors for different rooms will make the rooms look smaller. Also it is difficult to choose the color of accessories for the transition space between 2 areas of laminate with different colors.

How to trim the space between laminate flooring and ceramic tile?

Some one has a question: “I installed laminate flooring in my bedroom recently. There is my washroom if one door of our bedroom is opened. The floor of my washroom is covered ceramic tile. The ceramic tile is about 8mm higher than laminate floor. I just wonder how to trim the space between laminate flooring and ceramic tile. Please let me know to do it.”

The answer:

We suggest you use copper reducer to trim the space as wooden laminate flooring accessories is not waterproof and washroom is a place with much water. You can purchase the 8mm thick copper reducer and almighty glue water from the relevant store. Glue the copper reducer in transition space. Don’t step on the transition space in 2 days after the trim work to make the copper reducer glued to transition space firmly.

Paint laminate flooring?

Someone has a question:” I have had laminate flooring installed in my bed room. The area is about 400sqf. But I don’t like its colors. And it is too expensive to replace the whole area of planks. I like black colors. Can I paint the planks with black color?

The answer:

The lacquer on the surface of laminate will not be strong abrasion resistant. The color of laminate flooring will appear when the lacquer is worn out, which will make the look of floor ugly. Also it is very difficult for the lacquer to penetrate the first layer of laminate, the abrasion resistance. So the lacquer can’t stay on the floor surface for a long time. So it is not suitable to paint the planks.

Why laminate flooring cracked?

Some laminate flooring cracked after installation. There are several reasons for the crack:

1. The subfloor is not even. The floor area will remain even when people don’t walk on it. But when people step on it, the floor plank can’t bear the load due to unevenness of subfloor and become cracked.

2. The quality of support material for laminate is too bad. The support material can’t bear constant walk pressure. The laminate plank cracked after sometime of use.

3. The laminate plank has been punched with some big holes. And it became cracked after constant walk on it.

How to check the installation work of laminate flooring?

Many people like laminate flooring installed in their house. But they don’t know to check the installer’s work. Below are some ways to check the installation work.

1. The inspection should be done after 2 days since the installation is finished as this is the first time for each floor plank to work with others. They need time to work well to with others well. Also laminate flooring is a floating type. The floor planks need time to expand.

2. The accessory under the door should not prevent the door from “working” freely.

3. There should be no big noise such as creaking when people walk the floor.

4. The locking system of each plank of floor plank should work with each other well. The surface of floor should be even. There should be no big white line at the joint. The gap at the joint should be no more than 0.18mm. The plank shouldn’t push up at the joint, especially at the short side.

5. There should be no dirt, glue and big scratch on the surface. There should be no plumping problem or damage with the plank.

6. The accessories should have covered the gap between 2 floor areas or the gap between laminate floor and other type of floor covering materials such as ceramic tile. The accessories should be tightened. The cap of screw for the accessories should not be out of the surface of accessories. The gap between wall and floor should be between 8mm and 11mm. The accessory such as skirting or quarter round between wall and floor should not prevent the floor from floating freely.

The walk on laminate flooring

Some people like walking with naked foot in their house. Laminate flooring can offer comfortable foot feel although it can’t compare with hardwood flooring regarding the feel.

There is some sound when people walk on laminate as it is a floating type. The sound for 12mm thick type will be much less. Also most of the sound will be reduced if underlayment is attached to the back of flooring. The foot feel for 12mm thick type, laminate with attached underlayment and piano surface are much better.

Why laminate flooring is damaged at the edge?

Sometimes damage is found at the edge of laminate flooring. There is several possible reasons for the damage:

1. The edge is damaged due to wrong packing method. Laminate flooring should be packed with thick box. The whole package should be neat. Messy package will make floor planks impact each other during transportation. If the impact is too much, the edge will get damaged.
2. The quality of support material is too bad. When installer install and take the plank apart, the edge of laminate flooring possibly gets damaged.

 3. The installer work in a wrong way when tightening the locking system at the short side. The installer uses too much power to tighten the locking system at the short side. And the edge at the short gets damaged.

The pluming of whole planks of laminate flooring

Sometime the whole planks of laminate flooring push up. And the floor surface becomes uneven. There several possible reason for the plumping:

1. The whole installation area is too big. And the floor planks don’t have enough space to expand. When the installation area exceeds 8m*10m, T-moulding or other accessories must be used to gap the installation area.

2. The subfloor pushes up. Some end users put laminate on carpet, bamboo floor or hardwood flooring. When these floor materials push up, laminate plump accordingly.

3. There is not enough expansion space between wall and laminate. The expansion space must be at least 8mm wide. Laminate flooring is a “floating” type. It expand when it becomes hot.

4. Some floor area is immersed in the water. For example, heavy rain falls on the floor from open window. And the rain hasn’t been get ride of quickly. The floor planks will expand to its maximum in this case. And the wholes planks will push up.
